Originally used as a liner for tall hats it became more used as a shipping material in 1871. In the beginning wooden boxes were used which was vey heavy but provided great protection, when corrugated cardboard boxes started to be used it gave the same level of protection but made the packaging so much lighter decreasing the shipping cost. As the cardboard is about 10th of an inch thick it took up less space than that of a wooden shipping box meaning more items could be shipped.
Corrugated cardboard has two smooth outer pieces of cardboard that protect the inner corrugated card, the corrugated medium in the centre provides air columns which act as a cushion to prevent any damage.
Advantages Of Corrugated Cardboard:
Disadvantages Of Corrugated Cardboard:
*Cardboard has similar properties to that of wood. It is an anisotropic material (strong dependant on the direction of use). The strength of cardboard depends mostly on the material structure and on the raw material composition. It can be either from virgin fibers (VF) or recycled fibers (VF). RF have less resistance to moisture than the other.

Advantages Of Corrugated Cardboard:
- Corrugated Cardboard is light weight.
- Inexpensive and therefore widely available.
- Corrugated Cardboard Boxes have better printing and graphics capabilities..
- Corrugated Cardboard available in many different sizes and thicknesses.
- Corrugated Cardboard is completely recyclable in nature that makes them eco-friendly
- Strength
Disadvantages Of Corrugated Cardboard:
- Not great for use with heavy items
- Under extreme pressure or on stacking, Corrugated Cardboard may get deformed
- Poor moisture tolerance
- Requires protection from insects and pests
